Notts County at Wembley

Bantams up

Bradford City 2
Hamilton 1-0
Stallard 2-0
Notts County 0

Despite visiting Wembley, for the third year in succession (two Anglo-Italian cup finals), and for the fifth time, in seven years, county were well beaten, as they failed to bounce back to the first division, at the first attempt, after the previous year's relegation, in bottom place. Bradford had lost, in extra time, in the old second division play-offs, in 1988, to the eventual winners, Middlesbrough, and were relegated two years later. This was their first appearance at wembley, and was secured after they had lost the first leg of their semi-final, 2-0, at home, to Blackpool.

The following year, Bradford escaped relegation, by two points, but two years later, they were Football League runners-up, to Sunderland, and won promotion to the Premier League.

Meanwhile County never recovered from this defeat, and dropped into the third division, after finishing bottom. It had been 26 years since they had risen from the old fourth division. their return was shortlived however, and they ran away with the Third Division Championship, in 1998, to secure promotion straight back.
